Man Lift Specs
A man lift is an aerial platform with an extendable boom arm that raises vertically and horizontally at an angle. Man lifts get their name from the fact the operator controls the machine from inside the basket. Sometimes called boom lifts, these machines give operators access to tough-to-reach places.
There are two main types of man lifts. An articulating lift has pivot points along the boom arm, allowing it to bend. These pivots help the arm maneuver over or around obstacles. In contrast, telescopic lifts have a straight arm. Both types of man lifts are great for high mobility and reach.
Lift Height
Of all aerial lifts, boom man lifts have the best reach. The average lift height ranges anywhere from 40 to 185 feet. The exact reach will depend on the model you choose.
Man lifts with an articulating arm will be able to navigate around obstacles at crowded worksites. This makes articulated lifts easy to use for various job types and use cases. On the other hand, telescopic models are not as agile but have a much further reach. Consider the type of work you’ll be doing before deciding on the kind of man lift you need.
Load Capacity
Load capacity is the amount of weight a piece of equipment can carry. For man lifts, the typical load capacity is between 500 and 1,000 pounds. Again, this number is specific to the model you choose.
As the load center changes, so does the capacity. Be sure to follow the chart listed on the equipment for safe operation. Since a man lift raises a load up and away from the base, it offers less capacity than aerial lifts that only extend vertically, like scissor lifts.
